Az sonra uçağın merdivenlerinde uzun boylu, kızıl saçlı, güzel bir adam göründü. Adımları serbest, ama sağlamdı. Başını hafifçe geriye doğru atmıştı. Mavi gözleri merak ve ilgi doluydu. Onun buraya niçin geldiğini anlamamız için beş dakika yetip de arttı bile: o buraya dinlenmeye, ödül almaya, bir sayrılığından sağalmaya değil, yaşamaya, çalışmaya gelmişti. Bir tek parmak uçları, ellerine tutuşturulan bir kucak dolusu çiçeği tutarken yorgunluktan ve heyecandan hafifçe titriyordu.

Bu sefer Moskova’da çok farklı bir atmosfer vardır. Nâzım Hikmet’in 1920’lerin başında bıraktığı Sovyetler’deki devrim heyecanı yerini bürokratik baskıcı bir rejimin korkularına bırakmıştır. Nâzım Hikmet tanıdığı sanatçı dostlarını sorduğunda belirsiz cevaplar alır, edebiyat dergilerinde, tiyatro sahnelerinde Mayakovski’yi Meyerhold’u görememekten şikayetçidir. Stalin’in, sonu kendi doktorlarını tutuklattırmaya kadar varacak olan asıl paranoyası yeni başlıyordu diyen Yevtuşenko, Nâzım Hikmet’in tepkisini şöyle anlatır:
